LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University women's soccer team will be hosting a pair of opponents from the Sunshine State in Atlantic Sun Conference play as the Knights will welcome Stetson to Owsley B. Frazier Stadium for a 7 p.m. (ET) contest Thursday and FGCU for a 1 p.m. clash Sunday.
Stetson (5-5, 0-2 ASUN) and FGCU (3-4-1, 2-0) represent the first of two ASUN homestands for Bellarmine (1-6-2, 0-1-1) during conference play. The Knights are hosting both squads for the third season in a row.
ABOUT STETSON
Stetson is seeking its first points in the ASUN standings after falling 1-0 at home to Jacksonville and 2-1 at North Florida in the opening week of conference play. The Hatters did precede league competition by accumulating five wins among their nonconference slate, capping those victories with 3-1 and 5-1 triumphs over South Carolina State and The Citadel, respectively. Lea Alexander is pacing Stetson with four goals, Annika Seem has three and Stella Comana has registered two with three assists.
ABOUT FGCU
FGCU is the reigning ASUN Tournament champion and was selected as the league favorite in the ASUN preseason coaches' poll. After the first week in conference play, the Eagles are the league co-leaders with Central Arkansas after a 2-0 home win over North Florida and a 2-0 victory at Jacksonville. FGCU swept the ASUN preseason superlative awards, as Ashley Labbe (team-high four goals) was named Preseason Player of the Year, Reese Mendenhall was recognized as the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, Erika Zschuppe (one goal, two assists) was tabbed as the Preseason Midfielder of the Year and Olivia Molina (1.52 GAA, .833 save percentage) was cited as the Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year.
LAST WEEK
Particularly on defense, Bellarmine had an encouraging opening week of ASUN play. The Knights debuted with a 1-0 home loss to Austin Peay, but they limited the Governors to only four shots and amassed 16. Bellarmine followed with one of its top defensive performances in the D1 era in a scoreless draw at Lipscomb, which is the conference's defending regular-season champion and had scored 10 goals its three previous games. The Bisons commanded possession and amassed a staggering 33 shots, but the Knights were steadfast in protecting the box and allowed a minimum of truly threatening attempts in earning the clean sheet and a conference point.
DUPLICATING DOUBLE FIGURES
When Lipscomb did put the ball on frame,
Cambria Kingman didn't allow anything to get past her, as the senior goalkeeper racked up 10 saves. It was the second time this season Kingman reached double digits in saves after tying a D1-era program record with 12 against Louisville. She's registered five saves or more in five matches. Her 5.11 saves per game rank second in the ASUN, and her 46 total saves are tied for second. Kingman earned an ASUN Goalkeeper of the Week accolade on Sept. 9.
THE FLIPSIDE
While Bellarmine's defense has conceded only one goal in two ASUN games, the offense is still looking to produce its first goal in conference play.
