ALLENDALE, Mich. — Junior
Chase Atkins established a new men's program record in the indoor 5000 as Bellarmine University track and field competed Friday and Saturday in the GVSU Big Meets, which shared the same name but were two separate meets.
On Friday, Atkins clocked a 14:09.92 while placing first among college-attached competitors in the Section #1 5000. His time bested the previous program record of 14:14.68 held by
Paul Stamm from the 2023 GVSU Big Meet.
Also on Friday, junior
Jackson Gordon placed fourth in the 400 (47.98) and junior
Alex Hooten took eighth in the mile invite (4:08.56). Junior
Jansen Story secured fourth in the women's 600 (1:36.88) while sophomore
Amelia Svidal was sixth in the triple jump (11.48).
There were enormous amounts of competitors in most of the events in Saturday's meet. Freshman
Will Bracher placed fourth in the men's shot put (15.78) and 10th in the weight throw (15.75) while Gordon was seventh in the 800 (1:55.02) and junior
Alysia Hurtado finished eighth in the women's weight throw (16.20).
Bellarmine's women landed additional top 15s Saturday from sophomore
Raven Payne in the 200 (13th, 26.03), sophomore
Annie Somwe in the 400 (13th, 59.63), Story in the 800 (14th, 2:20.95) and Svidal in the long jump (12th, 5.18). Somwe was also top 20 in the long jump (19th, 4.96).
Additional top 20s for Bellarmine's men Saturday were provided by sophomore
James Bronzwaig in the weight throw (15th, 14.97), junior
Zac Hutslar (17th, 7.09) and freshman
Tommy Eisenback (20th, 7.13) in the 60, and freshman
Grant King in the 400 (19th, 51.32).
Bellarmine has concluded the indoor regular season. The Knights will host the ASUN Indoor Championship on Feb. 27-28 at the Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center.
