LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Junior
Chase Atkins set a new program record in the men's 10000 as athletes from Bellarmine University track and field competed in three separate meets this past week.
At North Carolina State's Raleigh Relays, Atkins' time of 29:06.30 in the 10k bested the previous mark of 29:44.66 held by
Paul Stamm from the 2024 Bryan Clay Invitational.
Also at the Raleigh Relays, junior
Jackson Gordon placed 22nd of 105 competitors in the 400 (47.70) and was 51st of 160 in the 800, where his 1:51.25 wasn't far off from Michael Cowherd's program-record 1:49.74 from the 1982 NCAA II Championships.
At the UAB Spring Invite, Bellarmine had four of the top 6 in the men's hammer throw, as sophomore
Alex Cole took top honors (51.77) while sophomore
James Bronzwaig was second (51.30), freshman
Will Bracher was fourth (44.58) and senior
Luke Wunsch was sixth (43.03).
Bracher placed first in the shot put with a heave of 16.14, a new freshman program record that topped Kade Christopher's 14.20 from the 2021 Kentucky Invitational. Cole was fifth in the discus (45.21) and freshman
Tommy Eisenback was fourth in the 100 (10.84).
Bellarmine's women's throwers had a pair of top 5s, as junior
Alysia Hurtado placed fifth in the hammer throw (47.36) and senior
Avery Koch was fifth in the discus (38.28).
At Western Kentucky's Brent Chumbley Memorial Hilltopper Relays, the women's 4x400 relay team of senior
Ellerie Heinzmann, freshman
Ginger Atzinger, freshman
Katie Schweigardt and sophomore
Molly Moore placed first (4:27.14).
Bellarmine had several runner-up finishes: sophomore
Amelia Svidal in the long jump (5.55), sophomore
Gabby Fomby in the 200 (28.97), senior
Trisha Sexton in the 5000 (18:41.64) and sophomore
Sophia Opalka in the 400 (1:03.77).
Bellarmine will host the
Jim Vargo Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
