CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--The Bellarmine University men's lacrosse team jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but the homestanding Harvard Crimson fought back with a dominating second quarter performance and cruised to a 21-10 victory this evening at Soldiers Field Stadium.
Goals in the first two and half minutes by the Knights'
Karsen Leung and
Will Cary staked the Knights to quick 2-0 lead in today's NCAA Division I non-conference battle with Harvard. The Crimson came back with three straight scores to take their first lead of the game. The Knights took another brief lead on Cary's second goal of the game before settling for a 4-4 tie after the first quarter.
Bellarmine's
Jordan Wong tallied the first score of the second period to give the Knights a 5-4 lead with 13:13 remaining in the opening half. Harvard then rallied for eight straight goals to storm out to a 12-5 halftime lead.
After the break, Harvard extended the scoring run to 9-0 with a goal at the 14-minute mark. Luke Action finally broke the Bellarmine scoreless streak with 10:29 left in the third to make the score 13-6. The Crimson were able to maintain at least a 7-goal advantage the rest of the way.
Scoring leaders were Dean Gibbons (3G, 5A) and Daniel Epp (4G, 1A) for Harvard. Leung tallied four points (1G, 3A) for the Knights with Cary, Acton and
Devin Peurach adding two goals apiece.
For the game, Harvard outshot the Knights 60-37 and held 35-29 ground ball advantages. The Crimson also cleared at 87 percent, while Bellarmine was successful on just 12 of 19 (63 percent) of their clears.
Dillon Ward and
Scott Bowles combined for 17 saves for the Knights.
Bellarmine suffered its fourth straight loss to drop to 2-4, while Harvard improves to 3-1.
The Knights conclude their 4-game road trip on Sunday, when they will face Hartford at 1 p.m.
