LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The name of the Bellarmine University lacrosse team's opponent in its home finale – High Point (N.C.) University – couldn't be more fitting from a metaphorical standpoint.
The Knights (5-4) will certainly be looking to end their home slate this season at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium on a high point. And that's exactly what it would be if Bellarmine was able to triumph over the streaking Panthers. Opening face-off is set for 7 p.m., ET on Saturday, April 5.
High Point (7-3) started its 2014 campaign at 0-2, including a loss to Towson, which received votes in the latest top 20 lacrosse poll, but the Panthers have had a single misstep since – a 10-9 setback to Mercer on March 22. That snapped a six-game win streak for the Panthers, who bounced right back the following week with a 15-7 thumping of Furman.
The latter was a near identical result to what the Knights did to the Paladins on March 1 in a 13-7 romp. Bellarmine and High Point have had two other common opponents in Jacksonville and Michigan. The Knights notched an 8-4 road win over the Dolphins, while the Panthers edged them at home, 8-7. The fourth victory of the six-game win streak for High Point was against the Wolverines, whom they beat 9-7, while Bellarmine fell to Michigan 11-10 in overtime at Frazier Stadium.
The rout of Furman produced the second-highest scoring effort this season for High Point. The Panthers' offense has been remarkably consistent, producing eight goals or more in every game since the team's opener. In fact, High Point has been so steady that it's scored either eight or nine goals in six of the team's 10 games.
Before falling to Mercer by a single score, High Point had been highly dependable in winning close games. During their month-long winning streak, the Panthers captured all six victories by two goals or less. A big reason for the team's success in nip-and-tuck affairs has been junior goalie Austin Geisler, who is fourth in the country in saves per game (13.20), fifth in save percentage (59.2) and 23rd in goals-against average (9.21).
Like Geisler,
Will Haas' name is prominent in the nation's goalkeeping leader boards. Bellarmine's senior goal-stopper ranks 14th in goals-against average (8.68), 30th in save percentage (52.1) and 39th in saves per game (9.38). Haas and the Knights' defense matched their second-best effort of the season in goals allowed in Tuesday's 10-7 win over Marquette.
Bellarmine's offense got untracked too against the Golden Eagles after being limited to a season-low three goals against current No. 13 Fairfield. The Knights bested that total less than four minutes into the second quarter when freshman attack
Tucker Ciessau put away Bellarmine's fourth goal. Ciessau alone finished with four goals to elevate his season total to a team-best 21.
Senior attack
Chad Mitchell also had a big game for Bellarmine, tallying three assists and two goals for a game-high five points. Mitchell leads the Knights with 11 assists and has added 13 goals, while freshman attack
Austin Shanks is second on the team with 15 goals and junior midfielder
Ryan Scinta is third in points with 18. Junior long stick middie
Bobby Schmitt is the definitive leader in ground balls (29) and also is tops in caused turnovers (14).
Matt Thistle leads High Point in points at 35, but the majority have come on assists (25). Dan Lomas, on the other hand, has accumulated 30 points with most (26) coming via goals. Stevie Kirkup has chipped in 10 goals for the Panthers.
Bellarmine will honor its seniors on Saturday. Saluted for the Knights will be Haas, Mitchell,
Paul Brebber,
Sean Joyce,
Cameron Gardner,
Bradley Davis and
Stephen Soriano.
