Box Score LOUISVILLE, Ky.—It will be a senior night to remember for Bellarmine University's
Stephen Soriano, a face-off specialist, who scored the game-winning goal just six seconds into the overtime period to defeat the visiting High Point Panthers 10-9 tonight at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
The Knights, who never led in regulation, battled back from deficits of 0-4 and 6-9 to force overtime as senior
Will Haas came up with a big save at the 1:23 mark to preserve the tie. In the overtime, Soriano picked up the ball on the face-off and raced straight to the goal and deposited a shot that beat HPU goalie Austin Geisler, who had recorded 17 saves in the opening 60 minutes.
Bellarmine improves to 6-4 on the season while High Point falls to 7-4.
The game opened with High Point scoring three goals in the first two and a half minutes and led 4-0 after the first quarter.
Bellarmine is no stranger to slow starts, however, with the High Point game marking the fourth time the Knights have been shut out in the opening period this year. Not panicking, Bellarmine made its comeback in the second quarter scoring twice in the early minutes to pull within two, then they scored the final three goals of quarter to pull even with the Panthers 5-5 at the halftime break.
High Point again surged ahead in the second half creeping ahead 9-6 with 13:43 left in the game. Bellarmine answered with three straight goals to tie it at 9-9 with 6:33 remaining, and neither team could break through for the rest of regulation.
The Panthers were led by Dan Lomas (5G) and Matt Thistler (3G, 2A) while Bellarmine featured a balanced attack with goals coming from seven different players.
Tucker Ciessau,
Ryan Scinta, and Dan Zamora each notched two goals while
Chad Mitchell,
Cameron Gardner, Soriano, and
Austin Shanks all contributed one goal. Gardner added three assists to lead the Knights with four points.
Bellarmine fired 47 shots on the game, while High Point pulled the trigger just 26 times with Haas recording eight saves for the Knights. The remaining stats were as even as the score would indicate with High Point having a slight edge in both ground balls (23-22) and face-offs (11-10). The Bellarmine defense forced 20 HPU turnovers while the Knights coughed it up just 14 times.
Prior to the game, Bellarmine held a brief ceremony to honor it seven seniors:
Paul Brebber,
Bradley Davis, Haas,
Sean Joyce, Gardner, Mitchell, and Soriano, who played their final game in Frazier Stadium.
The Knights close their 2014 season with road games at Virginia and April 19 and Mercer on April 26.
