LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University men's tennis team opened its spring schedule with a convincing victory over Centre College on Saturday, winning all but one match at the Eddie Weber Tennis Complex.
The Knights swept all six of their singles matches, which led them to the 8-1 victory as four different players collected two wins apiece.
Bellarmine won each of its singles matches in straight sets. Senior
Anton Rabinov, at No. 1, only dropped one game while making his return to the Knights after a year away from the team. Sophomore
Jose Legarreta had the tightest match in singles play at No. 2, but he still pulled out a 7-5, 6-3 win.
At Nos. 3-6 singles, senior
Alan Gardiner, junior
Nathan Walroth, freshman
Matthew Momper and senior
Logan Knott all didn't drop more than three games in any set in cruising to victories.
Bellarmine's lone loss came at No. 2 doubles, where Centre's Woody Rini and Logan Henize rallied from a 5-6 deficit to defeat sophomore
Zachary Kuo and Legarreta 8-6. The No. 1 team of Rabinov and Gardiner captured an 8-5 win, while Walroth and Momper took an 8-4 decision.
"It was a great team effort," BU Coach
John Mican said. "Great to see Anton back on the Bellarmine courts, and it was just generally good to play our first match and get the season's first win. Centre College hung tough for the most part and fought to the end."
Bellarmine will host Asbury University next Saturday.
