LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University tennis teams both gained victories against Campbellsville on Saturday at the Eddie Weber Tennis Complex, with the women cruising to a 9-0 win before the men triumphed 5-4 in a thriller.
The latter contest was tied at 4-4 and came down to a No. 2 singles match between Bellarmine junior
Zachary Kuo and Campbellsville's Alajandro Sorriano. Kuo managed to save three match points in the tiebreaker and delivered on his first match point to win 7-6 (7-4), 1-6, 11-9.
"When the pressure was at its highest, Zachary shined the brightest," BU Coach
John Mican said.
Bellarmine started the contest in commanding fashion, winning all three doubles matches. Kuo and junior
Jose Legarreta triumphed at No. 1, senior
Nathan Walroth and sophomore
Matthew Momper won at No. 2 and junior
Alex Swords and freshman
Lauren de Boeck were victorious at No. 3.
Campbellsville surged back by winning at No. 1 and Nos. 4-6 singles. In addition to Kuo, Momper was victorious at No. 3 singles.
"Every starter contributed to this win," Mican said.
The women's match didn't have nearly the suspense. The doubles matches were mostly competitive, but Bellarmine still managed to sweep all three. The Knights were dominant in singles play, winning all six matches in straight sets.
Freshman
Maggie Walroth (No. 1 singles and doubles), senior
Caitlin Hanley (No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles) and sophomore
Nadia Sabie (No. 2 doubles, No. 3 singles) all won two matches.
Singles wins were also notched by sophomores
Bess Fley (No. 4) and
Mairin Cotter (No. 5) and junior
Sydney Thompson (No. 6). Sophomore
Marissa Kovach and junior
Sydney Landers teamed for a No. 3 doubles win. Sophomore
Mary Elaine Kuo combined with Sabie for the No. 2 doubles win.
"It was an outstanding team effort to get the 'W' today as all nine players on the roster played and all contributed to the team score," Mican said.
Walroth now has a team-best 22 wins, while Mican mentioned that Sabie is really making strides.
"Nadia's strokes have always been solid, but now that she has been gaining match-play experience her potential is without limit," he said.
