LOUISVILLE, Ky.--The Bellarmine lacrosse team travels to Detroit this week to take part in the Midwest Classic hosted by the University of Detroit Mercy at Wisner Stadium.
On Friday, the Knights (1-3) take on the host Titans at 1 p.m. before closing the Classic with No. 18/19 Marquette on Sunday at 11 a.m.
No. 4/6 Ohio State is the fourth team competing in the Midwest Classic. The Buckeyes square off against Marquette at 5 p.m. on Friday, and they will meet the Titans on Sunday at 2 p.m.
In facing the Titans, Bellarmine is competing with a familiar foe. The programs have met nine times with the Knights owning a 7-2 advantage in the series. Interestingly, Bellarmine is 3-0 against the Titans in Detroit.
Both teams come into Friday's game with 1-3 records. Detroit Mercy has already taken on two Southern Conference foes, defeating Mercy 8-9 but falling to the Dolphins of Jacksonville 15-8. The Titans' other two games were losses to ranked opponents--Notre Dame (7-10) and Marquette (6-13). Brett Erskine (6G, 3A) and Matthew Vangalen (4G, 4A) come into the Bellarmine game as the leading scorers for UDM.
Marquette enters the Classic 2-0 with "W's" over Detroit Mercy (13-6) and Jacksonville (11-10). This will be the fifth meeting between the Golden Eagles and Bellarmine with the series record currently tied 2-2. Anthony Orsini (6G, 2A) and John Wagner (5G, 3A) pace the Marquette offense after two games.
The Knights are being led by sophomore
Morgan Macko with 14 points on seven goals and seven assists. Senior
Brian Wall is BU's leading goal-scorer despite playing in just three of Bellarmine's four games. The Penfield, New York native is averaging a hat trick with nine goals on the year with two assists.
