Knights lacrosse to host Furman on senior day

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—Three wins in a row is the goal for the Bellarmine Knights lacrosse team when it faces Furman in a Southern Conference game on Saturday at 1 p.m.in Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.

With back-to-back wins over Mercer and VMI, the Knights (4-8, 2-4 SoCon) enter the contest with positive momentum, while the Paladins (3-9, 3-3 SoCon) are going the other direction having dropped three straight to High Point, Air Force, and Jacksonville.

The Knights have been winning thanks in large part to a strong defensive effort. Bellarmine hasn't given up more than nine goals since March 17 at High Point. In the past two victories, the Knights second half defense has been particularly stingy, shutting out Mercer over the final 30 minutes and surrendering just one second half goal to VMI. Three Knights have recorded double digit caused turnovers in 2018: Eric Rubak (15), Kevin Fahey (11) and Josh Wehn (10). Meanwhile freshman goalie John Hulsman leads the conference in saves per game and save percentage.

Offensively, Bellarmine continues to be led by Brian Wall. The senior has rung up 24 goals on the season while dishing out eight assists and ranks fifth in the SoCon in points per game with a 2.91 average.  Other top scoring threats for the Knights include Morgan Macko (13 G, 9 A), Will Roshkowski  (12 G,A),and Ian Miller (6 G, 12 A).

Furman is paced by the duo of David Williamson and William Holcomb who have scored 23 and 21 goals respectively this season. Jonah Moore has been setting up the pair and has 22 assists on the year to rank second in the SoCon in assists.

Defensively, sophomore goalie Alec Van de Bovenkamp is putting up solid numbers and ranks just behind Hulsman in the SoCon rankings for saves per game with an average of 11.58.

Saturday's game also will be Senior Day for Bellarmine with a pregame ceremony set to recognize Eric Liddy, Chase Rose, Roshkowski, Austin Streeter and Wall.  (Fifth year seniors Kevin Fahey and Graham Macko were honored as part of the 2017 senior class.)
