LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Bellarmine lacrosse team makes its 2020 home debut on Tuesday afternoon when they welcome the Hampton Pirates to Owsley B. Frazier Stadium for a 3:55 PM game.
Both teams enter the contest looking for their first win as each sports an 0-2 record this season.
The Pirates have dropped decisions to New Jersey Institute of Technology (24-7) and Furman (19-4), while the Knights came up short against Utah (16-10) and Marquette (11-10).
Hampton, which is in the Big South Conference for most sports, is in its fifth year as an independent in lacrosse. Tuesday's game will mark the first meeting between Bellarmine and Hampton.
Through their first two games, the Pirates' point-leader is Derian Williams-Sturdivant with a goal and three assists. Michael Lawrence, Elliot Johnson, and Lonnie Jones are tied for the team lead for goals with two each.
Defensively, long stick middie Tyler Dey leads the team with four caused turnovers while close defender Pearson Benson has three. In goal, Kevin Mondy, Jr., has gotten both starts, but has shared time with Paxtin Powell. That duo has combined for 23 saves on the season.
Ian Groom is the Pirates' ground ball leader with 16, and the faceoff specialist has had a good start to the season by winning 29 of 53 battles at the "X."
Bellarmine comes in having scored 20 goals so far, and junior
Brayden Brown has been involved with seven of those, scoring five and providing a pair of assists. Fellow junior
Landon Trout also has been a big part of the Knights' offense this year with three goals and three assists.
On defense, nine different players have caused turnovers with
Tommy Franceschini picking up two.
Jon Robbins is the ground balls leader with six while freshman
JC Higginbotham has logged most of the minutes in goal, racking up 18 saves in two games.
Following Tuesday's game, the Knights will stay in town to host St. Bonaventure on Saturday at 1 p.m.
