LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Bellarmine Knights lacrosse team completes a busy February with their toughest test yet—a Saturday game on the road at No. 12 Georgetown University.
The game, which will be the first between the schools, is set for a noon start at Cooper Field, in the heart of the Georgetown campus in Washington, DC.
The Hoyas are off to a 4-0 start in 2020 after going 13-5 a year ago and capturing their second straight Big East Conference crown. Georgetown is led by a pair of preseason All-Americans with Jake Carraway and Gibson Smith both earning the accolade. They both were also named to the 2020 Tewaaraton Award Watch List earlier this season.
Carraway is the Hoyas' leading scorer this year after racking up 88 points last season on 57 goals and 31 assists. Smith is the Big East's reigning Defensive Player of the Year, picking up 106 ground balls and causing 34 turnovers in 2020.
Both players are off to good starts again this year, but they have plenty of help. On offense, Dylan Watson has already earned a Big East Attack Player of the Week honor, and on defense, freshman James Donaldson has five caused turnovers in his first four games.
Three Hoyas picked up honors from the Big East the past Monday. Carraway was Attack Player of the week; Smith was named to the league's weekly honor roll; and faceoff specialist Carson Milburn earned Freshman of the Week after winning 18 of 24 faceoffs and collecting 14 ground balls.
Bellarmine enters 2-4 on the season after suffering its first home loss of the season last Saturday against Boston University.
The Knights have seen a well-balanced attack in their first six games with four players totaling 15 or more points. Junior attack
Landon Trout leads the way with nine goals and nine assists with
Brayden Brown adding a team-leading 12 goals with five assists. The third member of the starting attack line,
Luke Legnard, has similar numbers, with 11 goals and five assists. Senior captain
Morgan Macko, meanwhile, has 15 points (9G, 6A) on the season.
Jon Robbins has emerged as Bellarmine's top player on the defensive end, leading the team in both ground balls (18) and caused turnovers (9). Other top defenders for the Knights include
Tommy Franceschini (7 CT),
Brendan Fennell (5 CT) and
Dylan Tulett (5 CT).
