LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Bellarmine lacrosse team welcomes the Hampton Pirates to Owsley B. Frazier Stadium on Saturday Feb. 26 for a noon game as both teams have their sights set on victory number one of the season.
The Knights have been on the doorstep of a victory in nearly all five games this season with four being decided by two goals or less.
In their last outing, Bellarmine erased a two-goal deficit to St. Bonaventure in the fourth quarter, but the Bonnies never surrendered the lead in the final period and held on for a 13-12 victory.
Benny O'Rourk, a preseason All-ASUN selection, has taken over the Bellarmine team lead in points with six assists and four goals on the season. Jesse Roth leads the Knights in goals with seven while Justin Wescoat and Brayden Brown have tallied six each.
On defense, preseason ASUN Defensive Player of the Year Jon Robbins is living up to those high expectations and ranks second in the nation in caused turnovers per game with an average of 4.0. He has 20 on the season and is on pace to break his own record of most CTs in a season (35).
Robbins also continues to extend his school record for most CTs in a career. After the breaking the record in his first game this season, he is up to 88 CTs in his career. He also is inching his way up Bellarmine's career ground balls list and enters the Hampton game tied with Geoff Griffiths for second with 142. Faceoff specialist Bobby Snider holds the BU record with 200.
Hampton comes into Saturday's game with an 0-2 record after opening the season with losses to Mount St. Mary's (5-17) and VMI (6-15) on Saturday and Monday.
Attackman Miles Fawcett is leading the Pirates offensively with four goals and an assist in two games. Defensively, Hampton goalie Paxtin Powell in the reigning SoCon Defensive Player of the Week after amassing 50 saves in the Pirates' first two contests.
Bellarmine has played Hampton just once previously, a 21-5 victory for the Knights in the COVID-shortened 2020 season.
