LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Bellarmine lacrosse team is back on the road this weekend taking on former conference foe High Point University on Saturday at noon in Vert Stadium.
The Knights (1-6) and High Point (2-3) have clashed seven times since 2013 with six of those games coming during Southern Conference play. The Panthers own a 5-2 lead in the series.
While Bellarmine has transitioned its lacrosse program to the ASUN Conference, HPU remains a member of the SoCon, where the Panthers are defending champs and the preseason pick to take the 2022 title.
High Point's early season record is a bit deceiving as all three of the Panthers' losses came to teams ranked in the top 10: No. 1 Virginia, No. 2 Maryland, and No. 10 Duke. HPU came up just one goal short to the Cavaliers, falling 11-10 in Charlottesville on Feb. 13.
The Panthers are led by 2021 All-American attackman Asher Nolting. The fifth year player is off to another great start, racking up 13 goals and 19 assists in the first five games of the season. His 32 points mean that he has been involved in more than half of the teams' goals this season. Matching Nolting's 13 goals is sophomore attack Brayden Mayea, who is coming off a hat trick against Duke in HPU's last outing.
Bellarmine's offense has been much more balanced with five players totaling 11 or more points through the Knights' first seven contests. Leading the way is
Kyle Playsted with seven goals and 12 assists, and
Jesse Roth is the top goal-scorer with 10.
On defense, Bellarmine continues to be led by
Jon Robbins, who enters with 26 caused turnovers on the year, which is the most in the nation. He also leads the team with 25 ground balls on the season.
