Bellarmine closes regular season on Saturday at Air Force

4/29/2022 9:18:00 AM

LOUISVILE, Ky.—The ASUN Conference Lacrosse Championship game officially begins on Thursday, but when Bellarmine visits Air Force on Saturday afternoon that game will have a postseason vibe as both teams have already qualified for the tourney.

In fact, Saturday's contest will decide the final seedings.  Utah has sewn up the No. 1 seed while Robert Morris is a lock for the No. 2 position.  That means the Bellarmine-Air Force winner will become the 3-seed and face the Colonials in the opening round while the loser will be the 4-seed and face Utah in the opening round.

On Saturday, the Knights will face the top scoring tandem in the league with Brandon Dodd and Brenden Crouse scoring more than half of the Falcons' 151 goals this season.  Dodd tops the ASUN scoring list with 44 goals and 64 points while Crouse is third in the league with 35 goals and 49 points.

The Air Force defense is anchored by goalie Jason Rose, who has picked up three ASUN Defensive Player of the Week honors this season.  He sports a league-best save percentage of 54.1 and has the ASUN's second-best goals-against average at 10.81.  Air Force also has one of the league's best defensemen in Quentin Carlile, whose 30 caused turnovers trail only Bellarmine's Jon Robbins' 42 among ASUN players.

Robbins, in fact, leads the nation in total caused turnovers, and his 42 are not only a school record but rank as the 13th-most in a season in NCAA history.  The Plano, Texas native also leads the Knights in ground balls with 53, and his 174 career ground balls rank second on the BU all-time list--the most by a non-faceoff specialist.

The Bellarmine defense is solid with Robbins getting plenty of help from freshman Brady Long and graduate transfer Jacob Berggren, who rank third and eighth respectively on the ASUN's caused turnover list with 23 and 15.  In all, the Knights are the top team in the ASUN in caused turnovers per game and rank sixth nationally with an average of 10.13

Offensively, the Knights have spread around the scoring with five players coming into the Air Force game with more than 20 points on the year.  Kyle Playsted heads that list with 53 (25 G, 28 A) with Brayden Brown ranking second with 29 (21 G, 8 A) in essentially just eight games.  Other top scorers for the Knights include Christian Della Rocco (17 G, 10 A), Jesse Roth (15 G, 10 A), and Benny O'Rourk (13 G, 10 A).

Game time on Saturday is noon Mountain Time (2 p.m. EDT).
